One Year After Saskatchwan removes the NDP from power…
One year later and the province is basically leading the country in optimism and growth.
Too bad it took 7 years after a commodity boom had started for the cultural pessimism to wear off of Saskatchewan. It remains to be seen whether or not the cultural liberalism/socialism that constantly lurks in the shadows and promises to return the NDP to power will rise again now that the world is on the brink of a recession.
Nevertheless…good on you Saskatchewan. Don’t look back!

No commentsIs the Left in Canada being financially starved?
When Chretien reformed campaign finance rules, just before exiting politics, he ended up destroying the Liberal Party money machine. No longer was the Liberal Party of Canada able to get the big easy money from the well-to-do friends and relatives amongst Canada’s elite. As a result the Tory base, (ie. farmers, small businesses, religious people) was able to out earn the Liberals with no problem. As time marches on the gap between Liberal and Tory has grown and the sad truth is that money talks when it comes to winning elections.
A larger picture view of this model seems to be unfolding across the nation.
Saskatchewan for instance is now governed by the Saskatchewan Party. The Saskatchewan Party is a coalition of former Tories and Liberals, united against the NDP. As it stands, an insider has informed me that the NDP is in financial ruin and the Star Phoenix has reported that the NDP are officially in a six figure debt.(Unofficially…who knows?)
The question that needs to be asked is this…’Does the nature of leftist ‘entitlement’ ideology ironically lead to fundraising destruction’?
Leftists tend not to want to actually contribute to things they believe in. They want the government to force others to do what they believe in. It’s not about personal action, it’s about group dissatisfaction. It’s not about putting their money where their mouth is, it’s about putting your money where their mouth is.
This might work when you’re accustomed to holding the reigns of power, but if you get knocked down, the climb back up can be impossible without a base willing to sacrifice. As a result, the culture of the left is slowly proving to be it’s own undoing.
No commentsHarper quickly appoints Senators
So much for an elected senate.
In anticipation of the January budget, Harper has decided to hand pick 18 senators to fill the vacancies he was leaving alone in hopes of electing them.
Oh well. Can’t risk the Liberals getting their hands on these seats.
No commentsDavid Swann wins leadership race for Alberta Liberals
Dr. David Swann actually seems like a decent politician. He is productive and holds strong convictions. The problem?
He is hard-core left-wing.
Looks like the Tories aren’t even going to have to try for the next couple of elections. There’s no way Swann is going to win.
No commentsThe rise and fall of liberalism
Alexander Tytler was born in the 18th century and was best known as a translator of languages. This quote is generally attributed to him, but there is some controversy as to whether it was his or not. Nevertheless, the content of the quote holds a lot of weight and needs to be thought about by everyone in the modern age.
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
- From bondage to spiritual faith;
- From spiritual faith to great courage;
- From courage to liberty;
- From liberty to abundance;
- From abundance to complacency;
- From complacency to apathy;
- From apathy to dependence;
- From dependence back into bondage.
The Liberal Coalition is a prime example of where we are on the Tytler cycle here in Canada. The rushed coup demonstrates that political discourse in Canada is in the last stage of the cycle. The Liberals need their subsidy and that was ultimately the reason for taking such extreme measures with the coup. They need the public subsidy and were willing to override the people of Canada in order to ensure that they continue to get public funding.
If this were only applicable to the Liberal Party itself, then it would simply be another flaw in the (not so) Big Red Machine. Unfortunately, this cycle applies to all of Canada.
Currently 1 in 5 people in Canada work for the public sector. Another 1.5 million are on welfare. Then you have loads of people with a vested interest in getting “stuff” from the government in the form of contracts,(Bombardier) or grants,(every ‘artist’ that doesn’t want to work for a living).
At the end of the day, a large amount of people in Canada have been conditioned over the past 70 years to believe they are entitled to ‘benefits’. ‘Benefits’ being ‘free’ goodies from the public purse. Eventually when demand for these goodies out weighs our ability to pay for them, the country collapses.
The last Federal election had a voter turnout rate of 59.1%. Pretty apathetic if you ask me.
Check the Tytler cycle one more time and decide for yourself where you think Canada sits on the chart.
No commentsPrayer for Canadian Government
Here is an interesting post by a fellow blogger on the freeblogit site.
http://prayerfuel.freeblogit.com/2008/12/09/prayer-for-canadas-government/
We can always use more prayer, especially at a time when people seem more intent on complaining or shouting rather than doing things that express appreciation or hope.
Consider this the first of some seasonal posts.
Merry Christmas!
1 commentIggy annoited Liberal Master!
Back room machinations have promoted Michael Ignatieff to the leadership position of the Liberal Party effective almost immediately. This is too bad for the Conservative Party, because now those big poll numbers will probably slide back down to the mid 30’s. The good news is that the damage to the Liberal Party has already been done. Also, Bob Rae’s dream of uniting the left is over. No Coalition option remains and Jack Layton is finished.
In January everyone will pile on the Tory budget. The NDP and Bloc will vote against it. The Liberals will vote in favour of it, and claim victory for “softening” the intent. The Tories will spend the next year smearing Iggy as an ex-pat Canadian who didn’t think Canada was good enough for his career and the next election will be averted until 2010.
Of course…this being Canada…who knows what will happen tomorrow?
No commentsSo Iggy wants to take the Liberals, Rae to block
All you need to know about new developments in the Liberal soap opera is that Michael Ignatieff wants to throw a coup inside the Liberal Party and get rid of Dion immediately, installing himself as interim leader.
Bob (I screwed up Ontario) Rae is trying to block this move as undemocratic and still backs the silly Coalition as an option.
Yawn.
No commentsThe mindset of a liberal – by Jack Wheeler
Dr. Jack Wheeler has been called a ‘real life Indiana Jones’ and he has lived a life of adventure and daring far greater than most people ever dream of. Many of his travels have taken him to remote regions where he studied primitive cultures and began to wonder what stopped them from progressing…
The reason I am posting this is because it says a lot about the mindset of the Dion’s and Layton’s of Canada that want nothing more than to push all of Canada in a leftward Coalition lurch that is far beyond the compassion that moderate minded people are willing to tolerate.
While Jack is an American and he is contrasting European socialism with primitive cultures, the univesal application of his thesis sound. The Evil Eye of Envy is a scourge.
Remember…whether you are embracing envy or fearing it doesn’t really matter…envy itself remains the only one of the ten commandments that is based on a feeling rather than an action.

No commentsPigs at the Trough
Some people might be wondering what a socialist party (the NDP) a left-wing separatist party (the Bloc) and a radical liberal Liberal party (the Liberals) have in common. Why are they forming a coalition?
The most obvious answer is that Harper was willing to take away their public financing (and his own) as a budgetary measure to help minimize the deficit. The problem with this is that the Liberals, (and to a lesser extent the NDP and the Bloc) have very little ability to generate revenue from donations.
For decades the Liberal Party of Canada was the party of choice for Canada’s eastern elites. Power Corporation, The Desmarais family, and Maurice Strong are the usual mafia style connections that are cited as backers of the Liberals. The banks and other corporations were big donation droppers as well. Bombardier needs a government contract? Hey Liberals, here’s a cheque for a million bucks! Thanks Bombardier, here’s a contract for a billion!
When Jean Chretien was Prime Minister and Paul Martin was nipping at his heels for the job, Chretien realized that forces were at play helping to push him out the door.
For reasons unknown exactly, (an attempt to paper over the sponsorship scandal may be one reason, although a middle finger to Martin’s ability to fundraise may have actually been the intent) Chretien changed the fundraising formula and banned large donations, especially those coming from unions and big business. The funds were supposed to be made up with a scheme to use taxpayer money to provide funding to parties who get a certain amount of votes during an election. It worked out to $1.75 per vote.
The consequence of this scheme was that the party with the big majorities would get the biggest paydays courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer. Since the Liberals considered themselves Canada’s, “natural governing party”, they had no problem passing it through.
Here’s the problem. Who contributes to the Liberals? Farmers? Small business owners? Political activists? Not really. The Liberals needed the big guys more than they realized, and when they stopped winning the big majorities they found that they were unable to raise money to compete with the Conservatives. This is why the Liberal Party is progressively getting worse with each passing year. The amatuer video, the bad campaigns, the lack of talent attracted to run for leadership…it all boils down to money.
Harper knew that the Tory base that sends in $10 or $20 or $50 by the tens of thousands could be counted on to keep the Tories growing, but the left wing parties are more accustomed to having government do things for them. As a result, when Harper put forth the option of cutting the vote subsidy the other three parties knew this would spell financial doom for the future of their ability to get back on top. We could literally be seeing the end of opposition in Canada.
So they started their little Coalition coup as a last ditch attempt to over throw Harper.
The lesson to be learned? Beware of taking the trough away from the hungry pigs, because they will do anything, ANYTHING to keep their bellies full.
(Except compete in the free market of ideas and actually try to fundraise from supporters because that would be too much work…and let’s be honest…leftists tend to want the government to do everything for them…including party financing.)
No commentsParliment Prorogued!!!
So Stephen Harper has convinced the Governer General to suspend Parliment for a couple of months while he works on a masterplan budget. Since the opposition has already decided to destroy him, it doesn’t really matter what he comes up with because they will simply vote against it and try to sell the Coalition as an alternative.
This means we’re heading to the polls in the first week of March. Yes, that’s right. Another election.
What can you expect?
The biggest Tory majority since the days of Mulroney if this poll is correct.

No commentsStephane Dion responds to Harper via horrible webcam!!
Anyone catch the Stephane Dion rebuttal to the Prime Ministers speech tonight?
Badly framed and out of focus.
These guys can’t even videotape a home movie and they’re going to “save” Canada?

No commentsTSX drops for third day in a row
So three days since the announcement of the Coalition and Canada’s stock market is still going down.
After the first day it seemed as though it was just dragged down with the world, but here we are three days later and the U.S. stock market is going up again, (for now) as are other resource based markets like Mexico and Brazil.
Canada? Down 30.85.
No big deal of course, but it is indicative of the Coalition and their influence in the eyes of the world. Think about it. To the outside world, Canada is a nice, quiet country full of beavers and trees. Suddenly a separatist, a socialist and a lame-duck liberal attempt a coup and Canada doesn’t look like such a great place to invest anymore.
French oil giant Total was apparently thinking of buying out Calgary based Nexen. They backed out. Gee, I wonder why? Not that I am advocating the pillaging of corporate Calgary by the French of all people, (We get enough of that from the Feds, regardless of political stripes) but nevertheless, it shows you that investing in Canada right now is cold.
Until this situation resolves itself, don’t expect much good news to come out of Canada’s financial environment.
No commentsEd Stelmach says, “Stop the nonsense”
Ed Stelmach and the leaders of the West are encouraging cooperation amongst ALL parties. Ed thinks this Coalition ‘nonsense’ will pass over by next week.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081201.wPOLpremiers1201/BNStory/politics/home
Really?
Why Ed? Why will it? Because the radical left is grown up and rational? Because they’re down with having their life-blood(ie subsidies) pulled away from them? They are fighting for their cash. This isn’t about Canada.
Does anyone think Ed has what it takes when the raping of Alberta begins?
Peter Lougheed didn’t have it then, I doubt Ed will have it now.

P.S. – I love how the Globe and Mail article refers to the Stelmach government as “right-wing”. (If only)
No commentsTSX Down the Next Day
So yesterday was the second largest drop in TSX history. In terms of actual numbers, (as opposed to a percentage) it was the biggest drop in TSX history.
http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2008/12/01/markets-monday.html
Notice the off hand comment about the Coalition in the article. Yeah. That didn’t have much to do with it…at all.
As a result, one would think that we’d see this drop as a buying opportunity. The DOW bounced up and the price of oil is rising this morning. So is the price of Gold. So is the price of Silver.
The TSX? In the red. After the biggest numerical drop in history. I guess a socialist party, a separatist party and a bankrupt liberal party working together “for the good of the people” just doesn’t look attractive to investors outside Canada.
Thanks Coalition.
No commentsThis is it!! The Coaltion Begins!!
Today marks the beginning of a new era for Canada. The Coalition of the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc have decided to band together and overthrow the Tories.
Regardless of the democratic implications of this new bizarre turn in the crazy country once described as “Canuckistan”, today marks the day that the radical left is in charge.
Make no mistake. This will be a massive disaster for Canada. MASSIVE!
There is so much to say, but I wanted to at least get this thing launched on the day the agreement was signed. The plan is to update regularly and build to a climax with the next federal election.
In the meantime, let’s watch as the Coalition demonstrates to Canadians on a massive scale why (again) the radical left should not be in charge of anything. It’s going to be an interesting trip. And it will end with Canada (like Atlas) Shrugging.
I can hardly wait!
